250 USD in 2011

The much awaited meeting between the Prime Minister and the various stake holders of the Bhutanese tourism industry was held on the 24th of February, 2010. Among other very importnt outcomes, one of the major decision was to NOT to adopt the much controversial McKinsey plans.

  • The Government of Bhutan is committed to the policy of “High Value, Low Impact”, minimal or no negative impact which does not undermine Bhutan’s culture, promotes ecological conservation, equitable distribution of tourism benefits and social harmony.
  • Diversification of tourism with a focus on wellbeing and spirituality, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing and Exhibitions), and adventure tourism based on principles of GNH (Gross National Happiness).
  • Regular consultation between the stakeholders: at-least 1 meeting between TCB (Tourism Council of Bhutan) and sector associations in 6 months. If required the sector associations should put in a written request for additional meeting.
  • TCB to update on all initiatives implemented on TCB website on regular basis.
  • Revision of tourism tariff: -
    • Tariff: To be increased to $ 250
    • Season: All year round (no lean or peak season months)
    • Duration Discount: 9th night to 14th night (Royalty: $ 45); 15th night onwards: No Royalty
    • Children below 12 years, no royalty
    • Surcharge, status quo
    • The tariff rule will come into effect from January 2011
  • Monitoring: Respective association to develop mechanism to monitor their members in collaboration with TCB. TCB to also check proper location and addresses of all tour operators.
  • Respective association to institute and promote ethical conducts (code of conducts, responsible tourism guidelines, etc…).
  • ABTO to monitor and regulate transparency of packages offered within the tariff.
  • ABTO and HAB (Hotels Association of Bhutan) to work together on improving cuisine variety and improvement.
  • ABTO and HAB to work out an amicable solution on debt issues.
  • No excuses for those involved in unethical tourism practices such as sex tourism.
  • Tariff differentiation on selling luxury resorts and hotels between tour operators and luxury hotels selling directly to be resolved by TCB.
  • The Prime Minister appealed to all the stakeholders to promote and preserve our national identity through wearing our national dress to individual private offices..
