Handicrafts shops are complaining that tour guides are charging them hefty commissions. A consultative meeting among tourism stakeholders held recently discussed various tourism issues to help the tourism sector generate 25,000 jobs and contribute 15 % to the country’s GDP by the end of 2013. The meeting addressed stakeholders’ grievances on many issues.
From services like wake-up call and newspaper delivery to the size of the room and beds, hotels in Bhutan will soon be rated on their services to earn “star” ratings.
The Ministry of Labour has penalized 22 hotels and resort owners in Paro for not framing the Internal Service Rule (ISR) as per the Labour and Employment Act of Bhutan 2007.
A 6-member team led by Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) started a countrywide hotel standardization and classification assessment on the 4th of March, 2010. The assessment is in line with the government’s decision which requires all hotels catering to tourists to be upgraded to a minimum of 3-star category.
With the new tourism policy in place to bring in 100,000 tourists by 2013 and to promote Bhutan as a high quality, low impact destination, the upcoming Hotel and Tourism Management Training Institute (HTMTI) will equip young Bhutanese in quality service.
The government’s decision to use Nu 26 million from the tourism development fund (TDF) as funding to market Bhutan as a tourism destination under the McKinsey plan has led to differences between the Association of Bhutanese Tour Operators (ABTO) and the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) over the fund’s control and ownership.
