Handicrafts shops are complaining that tour guides are charging them hefty commissions. A consultative meeting among tourism stakeholders held recently discussed various tourism issues to help the tourism sector generate 25,000 jobs and contribute 15 % to the country’s GDP by the end of 2013. The meeting addressed stakeholders’ grievances on many issues.
As per the directive of the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) through the TCB document: TCB/ABTO-05/2165, dated 30th July 2010, the following changes within the prevailing discount structure:
Tourists coming into the country will now have the chance to live in the wild, amid hundreds of species of animals, birds and plants. Diversifying tourism products, Bhutan’s 10 “protected” areas will now be opened for tourists, an outcome of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests (MoAF).
From services like wake-up call and newspaper delivery to the size of the room and beds, hotels in Bhutan will soon be rated on their services to earn “star” ratings.
A number of tourists, who visited Bhutan last year, cited lack of public toilets and rest rooms, credit card facility and bad roads as the biggest problem for tourists.
The Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) is pleased to announce that the “Tashel Online” system for online tourist visa issuance is ready for implementation. Together with the Department of Immigration, the project team will be testing the immigration module on live data on a real-time environment throughout April. To this effect, the tour operators are requested to apply for visas both on paper and online simultaneously, until we transition fully onto the online system from the 1 May.
